CARIBOU

Privacy policy

Effective 11 October 2026

1. Overview

This Privacy Policy explains what data CARIBOU collects, why, and how you can control it. CARIBOU is operated by the CARIBOU team. This policy covers the closed beta and will be finalised with a registered entity and dedicated contact address before public release.

2. Location Data

CARIBOU uses your device location — including in the background while navigation is active — to calculate routes, show your position on the map, provide turn-by-turn guidance, detect nearby hazards, and (if you choose to share a trip) show your live position to whoever holds the share code. Your route and location coordinates are sent to TomTom to calculate routes and search results.

Ghost Mode is on by default, which keeps your position private. If you turn it off, then while you are actively navigating your approximate position, heading, vehicle type and display name are also shared with other CARIBOU users navigating nearby, and theirs with you, so you can see each other on the map. This stops as soon as navigation ends. Turn Ghost Mode back on in Settings → Privacy to hide yourself from this at any time; it does not hide anyone else from you.

You can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings at any time; core navigation will not function without it.

3. Microphone

If you talk to Axle, the voice assistant, the app uses your device's speech recognition (on the device or via the operating system's speech service) to turn speech into text. We do not record or store raw audio.

4. Camera & Photo Library

The app uses your camera or photo library only for an image you choose: a profile photo, a photo of a saved place, truck stop or fuel receipt, or a screenshot for a feedback report. Profile photos, truck-stop photos (shown to other drivers only after we approve them) and feedback screenshots are uploaded to our storage; photos of saved places and receipts stay on your phone.

5. Account Data

As a guest, your account is an anonymous device-generated identifier with no personal information attached. If you sign in with email, Apple, or Google, we store the email address associated with that account.

6. Driving & Usage Data

To support gamification (rank, badges, leaderboard) we store cumulative stats tied to your account: miles driven, trips completed, hazard reports submitted, destinations visited, and similar figures. Your display name, these stats, and (if set) your profile photo are visible to other users via the leaderboard. Hazard reports you submit include their location and are visible to nearby drivers.

7. Diagnostics

Crash logs and Axle usage summaries are stored locally on your device only and are not automatically transmitted anywhere. You can export and share them with us voluntarily (Settings → Support), or clear them at any time.

Axle's replies are generated by an AI language model: the text of your question (never audio) is sent through our server to our language-model provider, OpenAI, to produce a reply.

8. Third Parties We Share Data With

TomTom (location/route data, for routing, search, and traffic/speed-camera information), Supabase (hosts our database, authentication, and file storage), OpenAI (generates Axle's replies from the text of your question), Apple/Google (if you sign in with those providers), and, where subscriptions are enabled, RevenueCat and the App Store/Play Store (purchase and entitlement data). We do not sell your personal data.

9. Data Retention & Deletion

You can delete your locally-stored data, community hazard reports, leaderboard entry, trip-sharing history, and nearby-drivers presence at any time via Settings → Privacy → Delete my account and data. This deletes your account itself (email, Apple or Google sign-in) along with your reports, trips, hours history and leaderboard entry, and signs you out.

10. Children

CARIBOU is intended for commercial drivers and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

11. Your Rights

If you are in the UK/EU, you have rights under data protection law to access, correct, or erase your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Contact us via the in-app feedback screen (Me → Help & legal → Send feedback) to exercise these rights.

12. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the app changes, particularly before public release. We will update the effective date below when we do.

13. Contact

Questions about this Privacy Policy can be sent via the in-app feedback screen (Me → Help & legal → Send feedback).
